The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) in Australia has issued the new Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (Clothes Washing Machines) Determination 2024. The standard will take effect on October 5, 2025, replacing the Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (Clothes Washing Machines) Determination 2015.

It sets the following requirements for household clothes washing machines:

• Minimum energy efficiency requirements
• Energy labelling requirements
• Product performance requirements
• Testing procedure requirements

 The key changes in the new version compared to the previous one include:

• Revised and updated reference standards
• The energy label now contains program time (in minutes) helping customers easily compare washing cycle duration and choose models according to their preferences
• New GEMS-level requirements with details of minimum efficiency requirements to help detect inefficient clothes washers on the market
• Additional test procedures for identifying multi‑compartment clothes washers and testing voltage for single-phase products.

The updated standard also focuses on performance criteria such as soil removal (wash performance), water extraction (spin performance), severity of washing action (clothes damage) and rinse performance. This helps to verify the quality and compliance of supplied products.
